The annual LBSLSC Tapu Te Ranga Island swim is a fun challenge for swimmers. For just $15 entry per swimmer you can take a ride in a Surf Lifesaving IRB out to the Island and swim back as fast as you can.

Numbers will be limited so make sure you register. While wetsuits aren’t compulsory, they are recommended.

MAKE SURE YOU PAY ON THE DAY

Entry is $15 CASH per swimmer. This is payable at 7:15am on Island Bay beach, by the jetty, on the day.

Competitor numbers will be issued at that time. Swimmers will then be walked down the beach to the start (opposite the Lighthouse House on The Esplanade).

You can also donate $15 to have a member of the Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club swim with your child if you can’t (or don’t feel like braving it!).

CAN’T REGISTER ONLINE?

Hmmmm. We guess you could try and register on the beach on the day, but it isn’t recommended as time will be limited!

FURTHER DETAILS…

7:40am  Give it a Go Swimmers start making their way to the island in a IRB

Give it a Go swimmers will then move down to the water where they’ll be ferried over to the Island by an inflatable rescue boat in groups of five.  Swimmers will be dropped off in the water, a couple of metres from shore (to avoid the rocks), and then make their way onto the Island.  A swim marshall will be on the Island to direct them to the start line.

8:00am  Give it a Go Swim starts

The first swim group (Give it a Go) starts after all swimmers have been ferried to Tapu Te Ranga Island.

As swimmers complete the swim to Island Bay shore, they’ll be given a laminated place number (by a marshall) and directed to the recording table, where their place number (and possibly their finish time) will be noted.

Swimmers MUST sign off at the recording table, even if they don’t finish the swim. It’s as much about ensuring your safe-and-sound as anything.

8:30am  There & Back Swim starts

Swimmers start on the shore line in the middle of the bay.

As swimmers complete the swim out and around the buoy and back to Island Bay shore, they’ll be given a laminated place number (by a marshall) and directed to the recording table, where their place number (and possibly their finish time) will be noted.

Swimmers MUST sign off at the recording table, even if they don’t finish the swim. It’s as much about ensuring your safe-and-sound as anything.

After the swim

Refreshments will be available near the finish line for all participants.

Once all swimmers have completed the swim, certificates will be presented, plus lots of goodies.

If you’d like more information about the swim, email admin@lyallbayslsc.org.nz  If you’re competing, please make sure you’re on the beach by 7:15am.

This event is part of a Day in the Bay – the Island Bay Festival 2017. Prizes have been generously provided by Brew’d Bar, Floyd’s Café and The Lighthouse Stay in Island Bay (the Grand prize).

Good luck!
